VIRTUS //

M.I.T.A.

WITH A STEADY RISE THROUGH THE RANKS AS A FORWARD THINKING ARTIST CREATING DANCEFLOOR SMASHERS, MATTIA BORRIELLO, MUSICALLY KNOWN AS M.I.T.A, HAS STARTED THE YEAR WITH A BANG. OPENING 2020 WITH AN EP ON PIG&DAN'S ELEVATE LABEL BEFORE HIS LATEST OUTPUT ON ANDRES CAMPO & EATS EVERYTHING'S NEW BORN STABLE EI8HT. WE CAUGHT UP WITH M.I.T.A AHEAD OF THE RELEASE...

Hello Mattia, thanks for taking the time to speak to us at Virtus, where in the world are you right now?

My pleasure!

Thanks for letting me chat to you. I’m based in Ischia, a wonderful island in the Gulf of Naples, but I’ll move from here later this year.

With a little over a decade in the industry as a producer, your stock has risen gradually, and production style has evolved. What would you say has been your most important release to date that has propelled you forward as an artist?

Ah It’s hard to pick one, but if I have to, I would go with my ‘Wide Angle’ EP released last year on Suara. The release bumped into the top 5 on Beatport and received a lot of unexpected support. I noticed from that point on, people started to enjoy my music even more because they began to appreciate the fact I always pushed to make my kind of techno without any compromise.

What would you say were your main influences for your latest EP forthcoming on EI8HT and how does it feel to be working alongside such credible artists as Eats Everything & Andres Campo?

I can tell you I’ve always been a fan of Truncate to be honest! David is an amazing person and he even made a remix for me some time ago (under his old project Audio Injection). I’m always amazed by his grooves and the way he tweaks his drums! So, I got inspired by him, actually, always trying to keep my signature untouched. And being EI8HT makes me so proud. Both have been supporting my music for quite some time, so I dedicated several months to ‘The Treatment’ release and it worked out!

Can you tell us a little bit about the process of creating the title track 'The Treatment'?

Well, first of all it took me 3 weeks just to develop the main synth line. It drove me crazy! Secondly, I felt the need to make something different from the trends which are popular at the moment. I am sure you guys know how hard it is to sign a track that “sounds different”. And thirdly, I thought it would be cool to add some sort of breakbeat feeling to the track, that’s why after the main drop I changed the kick pattern to lead to dance! In the end, I’m super grateful Dan and Andres gave me such a good opportunity to release on one of my favourite labels at the moment.

If you could work with any producer on a collaboration, who would it be?

Right now, I’d love to work with Avision and/or Truncate.

2020 is looking strong for you already on the release front with ELEVATE & EI8HT, can you tell us any exclusive news about what else to come from you this year?

Recently I signed to Spartaque’s Codex imprint with a 4-tracker EP but that’s the only exclusive thing I can tell you at this stage. I promise I’ll tell you more in a while ;)

As a DJ, what artists are you really digging in your sets right now?

Cleric, TWR72, Truncate and Mark Broom.

We have lots of budding producers reading our articles with artists like yourself, can you give them one piece of advice that would help them on their journey starting out creating their own music?

What I can say: STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF. I know the feeling of being stuck on a project or idea for several days, weeks or months. But with time you’ll be able to deal with emotional chaos and ideas will flow straight to the goal you were aiming for.
