DRUNKEN

KONG

EVEN WITH A CONSISTENT OUTPUT OF HIGH QUALITY ELECTRONIC MUSIC IN THE LAST DECADE, THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING FOR DRUNKEN KONG WHO IS AN ARTIST DEDICATED TO THE CRAFT OF CREATING MAIN ROOM, ENERGETIC TECHNO...

Hello, thank you for taking the time to speak with us at Virtus, where in the world are you right now?

Hello, thank you for having me. Right now I am in Tokyo, Japan.

Drunken Kong is an interesting name, can you tell us how that came about?

When I first started this project,  I was working with my partner Kyoko. My name is Dee so we took our initials D and K and came up with our current project name.

In the last 10 years you have spread your sound all around the world, was DJing something you were doing before you started to produce your own music?

Yes I have been DJing and producing for around 15 years.  In the beginning I was just DJing random styles of electronic music from Techno, Trance to downtempo.  Whatever I found interesting.

The sound of techno has changed somewhat in the last few years, do you find that trying to stay with current dance floor trends yet keeping your own individual production style can be difficult at times?

For me, what is important is to have my own sound and style. These days on Beatport, I find a lot of tracks are starting to sound similar in style so I try to stay away from this trend and work on developing my own style and groove.

You have put out some stellar releases on many of the biggest labels in the industry, if you had to pick one, what release would you say has given you the most attention in your career so far?

For me I feel my first EP release on Tronic  got alot of attention.  First of all, to be able to release on Christian Smith`s Tronic was a dream come true moment for me.  Until then, I never imagined top Djs supporting and playing my tracks but when the first EP was released, I couldn't believe with the response from so many artist that I looked up to for many years!!

In the studio, what are some of your favourite hardware/software plug ins you like to use?

In the studio, I like to use my King Korg, Moog Sub 37 and Roland Juno 106.  I also use a lot of plugins such as Rob Papen Subboom Bass, Synapse Audio Dune and for mixing I use UAD, which I absolutely love!!

What producers are you really enjoying listening to at the moment?

Its very hard to pick since there is so much great music out there now.  Victor Ruiz has always been one of my favourite producer.  I also really like Japanese artist M. Fukuda and Belgian artist Sonate.  I have always been playing their tracks and it works so well on the dance floor.

Can you tell us the inspiration behind your brand new EP set for release on Tronic?

For this EP, my inspiration came a lot from my 8 months old daughter.  Just seeing her growing up everyday is so amazing that this really gave me the energy and ideas for this EP.

What is one piece of advice you would give to anyone starting out a career as a DJ/Producer?

My best advice is to not give up.  In the beginning starting your career can be so frustrating and stressful.  Things often don't go the way as you planned but you just have to keep your head up and stay positive.  If you keep working on your goal, I believe things will start moving eventually.  Sometimes it takes a year, sometime it takes 10 years, this really depends but the important part is to not give up!

Where can we see you play next?

I have some gigs coming up here in Tokyo and in spring I will be back in Europe which I am really looking forward to!
