POLE

WHEN TWO RESPECTED SOLO PROJECTS COME TOGETHER IT USUALLY CREATES FIREWORKS & THIS IS NO EXCEPTION. GERMAN DUO MARCUS SCHMAHL & MARK ULLRICH, ALSO KNOWN AS 2POLE, ARE TAKING THE TECHNO SCENE BY STORM ONE RELEASE AT A TIME...

Hello guys, thanks for taking the time to speak with us at Virtus, where in the world are you right now?

Thanks a lot for your invitation! We are based in Germany. Marcus’ studio is 60km from Frankfurt and Marks base is quite next to Hannover, where we are working right now on new 2pole tracks and doing marketing stuff for our latest EP on Tronic.

2pole is a relatively new adventure...tell us about how the project came about?

2pole was born about two years ago. But we both are musicians since more than 20 years and worked on several projects of different music genres. Marcus is well known as „Broombeck“, released already on big techno labels and played live and as a DJ in big clubs around Europe. Marks history is quite similar. With his project Mark Deutsche he made chart topping singles. That’s is where we met first. Marcus asked Mark to do a remix for his label Yes We Can. At a meeting we both realised that our workflow is absolutely similar and we have quite the same idea but different studios. So we tried to collaborate, which turned out very well!

Already you have released your music with top labels like Tronic, Phobiq & Transmit...Can you tell us any new and upcoming releases you have scheduled?

Of course! Right now our fourth EP on Tronic got released. Atom EP comes with four techno tracks which are quite different but with our 2pole flavour. One track is produced in collaboration with our friend Colectivo Triangular. The next release is a track we made with Christian Smith on a Tronic Compilation and a remix EP containing another track we made with Christian remixed by Jam El Mar. After that we have a big techno EP coming on Suara, followed by another one on Bush Rec. We have a lot of new tracks made by ourselves and in collaboration with other DJs in demo mode already, which will see the light in 2018! You will find more news on our pages.

Do you plan on owning a label together in the future?

At the moment we concentrate on EP releases and a few remixes. And we are about to start working on our first album. We think it’s not important to start another new label at the moment. The competition is quite hard with countless labels on the market. We have to grow first to get a solid name and more fans who love our style and music.

You have played different gigs across the globe as 2pole & as solo artists respectively...can you both remember one gig that really stands out as the best of your careers so far?

Marcus: For me it is definitely my Broombeck live gig Berghain main room on Monika Kruse birthday party. This was outstanding!

Mark: I played on a big festival named Woodstock NL which was pretty amazing.

Are there any producers that you are really digging at the moment?

Slam, Keith Carnal, Illariio Alicante

When you are writing music in the studio, what hardware/software plug-ins do you really love to use in all your tracks?

We both work with Ableton Live as our main DAW. Our main plug-ins are all the Fabfilter, Softube and U-He stuff, and Eventide Blackhole. Our main hardware synth are Novation Peak, Elektron Analog Four & Rytm, modular system, Arturia MatrixBrute, Moog Voyager, Roland TR-909, Oberheim SEM, mfb Dominion, AKAI MPC Live, our Push2 Controller, Elektron Analog Heat and more… We swap our main instruments regularly to get new inspirations for new music and sounds.

Are you both influenced by music other than techno?

Yes of course. Marcus is doing a lot of electronica, downbeat and ambient music and Mark is producing a lot of tech house and deep house stuff. But we are open minded, because we both are working as music producers for several acts and DJs, who are playing different kind of music.

If you could give one piece of advice to anyone starting out a career as a DJ/Producer what would it be?

Do what you like, be outstanding, don’t copy other artists AND work hard to get the best results ever!

Where can we see you play next?

We play next at a boat party MS Stubnitz in Hamburg (GER), followed by a Tronic Night at Eden Ibiza and at Suma Beach in Istanbul.
